Chef Stephanie Unpacks TPACK...With Cheese?

Updated: Jul 7, 2020

I never knew what quickfires were until starting my Master of Arts in Educational Technology. And honestly, some of them are stressful but some are quite interesting. I did a quickfire that involved me "cooking" (but not really). It did have an underlying analysis of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge, also known as TPACK. According to Drs. Matthew Koehler and Punya Mishra (2006), TPACK is:

"the basis of good teaching with technology and requires an understanding of the representation of concepts using technologies; pedagogical techniques that use technologies in constructive ways to teach content; knowledge of what makes concepts difficult or easy to learn and how technology can help redress some of the problems that students face; knowledge of students’ prior knowledge and theories of epistemology; and knowledge of how technologies can be used to build on existing knowledge and to develop new epistemologies or strengthen old ones" (p. 1029).

Long story, short, it is a framework that supports educators in paying particular attention to the content, the strategy or pedagogy, and the technology, or tool to support students in mastery and understanding of the content.

I was given three tools: a large plate, a medium-sized bowl, and a vegetable slicer. My job: To slice cheese for a cheese platter. Check it out below! NOTE: The end product may not be what you expected.

Here are my conclusions: As an educator I need to repurpose or modify pieces of technology to make sure it fits to what I am teaching my students. If my students have not used Popplet, how will it support their learning? How will it be effective for them to use for mapping out their writing? I need to be mindful of what type of technology will be useful for the specific learning content I am teaching them.
