MAED Showcase

Throughout my master's program, I have had the opportunity to learn a plethora of information in many educational topics: From the psychology of classroom management to literacy instruction strategies; from educational practices throughout history, and so much more. These topics have pushed me to think critically and have helped me to grow and continue to grow as a learner and an educator.

On this page, you can explore all my meaningful presentations and high-quality papers throughout my years at Michigan State University in the Master of Arts in Education (MAED) program. Although these artifacts were created for specific classes, it shows how my knowledge, experiences, and skills from these courses impact my teaching and professional practices today. I sorted my artifacts into two different themes: Inquiry and Professional Development. Click on each artifact so you are able to see the entire piece of work.

Analysis of Biographical Subject in Philip Cusick's (2005) A Passion for Learning

This paper shows my analysis of Jane Addams, one of the biographical subjects in A Passion for Learning, written by Philip Cusick. It goes into detail about her past educational experiences. The paper explains in depth the argument that other factors, not necessarily learned from a formal institution, aided in her many leadership roles. It shows my ability to question, elaborate, and explore this individual's life, which is important to inquiry.

Analysis of Student Data

This paper is an analysis of two elementary school students who have areas of improvement in literacy instruction. These students were given assessments that I viewed, and from that data, my responsibility was to figure out the area needing improvement, and come up with specific goals and instructional strategies. This paper shows my decision-making skills in making sure students' learning is met to their specific needs.

Learning through Inquiry in Professional Learning Communities

 â€‹

This inquiry project was based off a literacy unit plan taught during my internship. I had to analyze my students' assessments and data, create a focus question relating to the assessments, and bring all the information and thoughts to a professional learning community of peers from my internship group. This artifact showcases my ability to participate in a professional learning community, share ideas and feedback, and reflect on my teaching practices.

Literacy Case Study

In this case study, I selected a student from my classroom. I identified challenges the student faced and assessed different literacy strategies to help support my student. This case study shows the skills required to meet all students' individual needs and the importance of receiving instruction based on a student's strengths and weaknesses.

Narrative Inquiry â€‹in Vivian Paley's (1997) The Girl with the Brown Crayon

In this paper, I dive into the narrative inquiry of Vivian Paley's (1997) The Girl with the Brown Crayon. By writing daily anecdotes of how her students learned and reflecting on her own teaching practices, it improved Paley's teaching in the classroom. This paper shows my ability to critique, inquire, and reflect about an individual's teaching approaches.

Teaching Young ELLs in the Classroom

This presentation showed my ability to plan a professional development session on a specific topic for a group of educators. It shows my decision-making skills in figuring out what information to include that would be pertinent for the specific group of individuals targeted. My focus on teaching young ELLs was meaningful since I am not too familiar with working with these group of learners.

Exceptionalities Professional Development with Fact Sheet

This presentation and fact sheet were to showcase a certain focus in the realm of learning disabilities and exceptionalities. Our group focused on IEPs and 504 plans. Both the presentation and fact sheet showcase my skills in researching a specific topic and presenting pertinent information for others to understand and learn about the topic, along with gaining awareness.

Classroom Management Plan

This is my classroom management plan, which focuses on five different aspects. Here I take all my knowledge of classroom management learned from the course, and apply it to my own management techniques. This plan showcases my expertise in focusing on certain areas of classroom management. It shows my decision-making skills in the most important aspects of a management plan.
