Distribution, Constitution...Attribution?

In high school, before finishing our social studies or math tests, we had to write our signatures on the last page. Now, one may wonder, uh why would you do this, Stephanie? Well, because it was our way of saying we were not cheating and all the work we had written belonged to us. My school called it Academic Integrity. I guess I can now call it attribution, a term I learned this week as I explored media use.

So many terms bounced around in my head such as attribution, copyright, and fair use. Now, where did these terms come from? Why am I just hearing most of them now after years and years of copying and pasting? Renee Hobbs’ (2010) book solidified many of these terms for me and I have gained some knowledge regarding these topics. Now, I am nowhere near an expert, however, throughout this week, I learned some things:

• Copying and pasting is not okay, even if it is the “easy way out.”

• Attributions include citations in our educational work, including what I am currently writing in this blog.

• And other AHA moments.

Hobbs (2010) brings up a valid point with media usage and possession of copyrighted material by saying there is a “climate of fear among educators concerning the use of these resources for teaching and learning.” However, we should not have a fear when using resources we locate and use in the classroom setting. Instead, we need to be cognizant of what we choose to use, give credit when needed, but also understand it is “necessary to use copyrighted works” for the purpose of educating students in the classroom and to become educated citizens in our world.

Below is my remix video on attributions. By introducing and educating remix culture to students, they can learn about the rules and regulations of copyright and the dos and don'ts that come with it.
