Alright, so you might be curious if a person can learn how to backflip within weeks. Well, honestly, it depends on your expertise, and to be honest… I don’t really have that much, as you can see in the first video where I am attempting a backflip.

I am able to do the basic techniques of a gymnast and that’s a faaaar stretch. I do have some flexibility with my body. But learning how to backflip takes time and effort. One thing to note is there are more components than just the backflip. Some of the videos I watched on YouTube, such as this one, taught me I needed to learn separate movements before enacting a backflip. One of the moves was a back roll. When I tried it, I could do the dancer’s back roll (I danced since I was 4). However, I needed to know how to roll straight back and not over my shoulder. Here are the attempts of my back roll featuring a furry friend.

There are other videos on YouTube where people jump into a backflip and continue to do it repetitively. I considered doing it that way. However, safety first! I want to learn but also make sure I don’t break my neck or hurt myself. I will consider propping pillows on the floor like some videos I saw. I will also check out more affinity spaces, where I can participate in different ways and levels and voice my individual knowledge (Gee, 2004). Check in next week as I wrap up my project and see if I do consider flippin’ over and over.
